A GROUP of youths from 10 villages in the Higaturu local level government along the Kokoda Highway in Northern have surrendered illegal items in their possession to a taskforce team.
National Capital District task force team leader Patterson Gambe said 64 homemade guns, 108 gas bottles, 12 containers for homebrew, 52 arrows and 50 live rounds of ammunition were surrendered.
Gambe said marijuana plants were also uprooted.
“We are encouraging youths to stay away from illegal activities, and, so far, we have covered 10 villages and will be covering more to restore law and order in the province,” he said.
Gambe said many youths were involved in illegal activities because they could not find jobs.
“Apart from the awareness, we are assisting the provincial police to deal with outstanding cases especially murder.”
He said individuals arrested at Ambene village for a murder relating to a sorcery case, had been charged at the Popondetta Police Station.
Acting Oro administrator Trevor Magei, and Higaturu Oil Palm company officials witnessed the event.
Magei said producing homebrew to sell was never a traditional way of survival.
He said the Government had a structured approach in assisting people who wished to help themselves.
