THE National Capital District (NCD) governor’s cup will be used as a platform to identify talent for team NCD in the PNG Games next year, an official says.
NCD community and social services manager Kila Dick said the tournament committee would select league talents to represent NCD in rugby nines during the tournament.
“Next year will be the PNG Games and NCD will be participating as one of the hosts,” Dick said
“We have rugby nines included in the games so the honours is on the committee to identify some talents for our NCD rugby team.
“It’ll also be an occasion to market some of our important players so we’re giving this opportunity to them during the governor’s cup.
“PNG Games will be hosted in second term school holidays around June and July so we have about five months to get ourselves organised and prepared,” he said earlier this week.
The tournament that started on Monday was played in four selected venues around the city in Gerehu, Hohola Ipi Park, Kone Tigers Oval and Bomana Redsea Barracks.
He said 48 teams have been placed in eight pools of six teams. Each venue will cater for two pools until the round games are concluded. Tournament director Dago Rarua said the offseason rugby league competition would head into recess this weekend and would resume after the New Year.
“Let’s all enjoy a violence-free tournament and stop all forms of violence during this event,” Rarua said.
“Sometimes we always want to win but we also have to accept defeat at the same time. So be a true sport ambassador without causing trouble.”
