SCHOOLS hosting cultural events need to inform police well in advance so that adequate resources can be deployed to provide security in any school organised activities like cultural show, says police.
Assistant Police Commissioner, National Capital District and Central Anthony Wagambie Jnr said this following an incident occurred after the Gerehu Secondary School cultural show in Port Moresby on Saturday.
“Police assisted the school with their presence both inside and outside the school premise however, there were quite a number of bag snatching incidents, drunkards behaving disorderly, fighting and harassment,” he said
Wagambie said police who were deployed were able to clear the rowdy people outside.
“So far police have not received any information of deaths related to Saturday’s event as reported on social media,” he said.
ACP Wagambie said in an unrelated incident, a man was severely injured after he was slashed in the leg and knee at Gerehu Stage four.
“Also there was a photo circulated on social media a man lying in the middle of the road at Gerehu stage two with his face covered with betel nut spittle and not blood and he is not dead as reported,” he said.
Wagambie clarified that the man was caught in a drunken brawl and beaten by the crowd and he was later assisted by St John Ambulance.
Meanwhile, he emphasised the need for better collaboration between event organisers and Police.
“For the police, we are very concerned about the cultural shows that affect the general public,” he said.
“Cultural shows are very important and significant in that we display our unique cultures through song and dance and it keeps our traditions alive through our children,” he said.
