Police warn of piracy

POLICE have warned owners of small boats and crafts along the Morobe coastline to be on the lookout for sea pirates and criminals.
Acting Lae metropolitan commander Senior Inspector James Luan said a number of motorised dinghies had been reportedly commandeered and their skippers, crews and passengers robbed as well as escaping with the boats and engines.
“This is now becoming common along our coastal villages; and people must watch out for this,” Luan said.
“When the thieves are done using the craft and engine, they would normally sell them to buyers in faraway locations.”
He said in most instances, the stolen boats were used to commit other crimes.
“Boat owners, skippers and crews be cautious of such situations and think safety-first when travelling out at sea.”
Luan said many such incidents had occurred at night.
He said people suspecting any such activities must immediately make contact with police.
Meanwhile, with many schools beginning classes this week, Luan urged students to look out for opportunists who may harass them.
