POLICE have made 11 arrests so far in relation to a land dispute in Kainantu, according to Police Station Commander Inspector Steven Yalamu.
“People brandishing weapons along the main highway have been considered a threat and arrested in relation to the Incorporated Land Group (ILG) dispute (regarding) the Ramu 2 Hydro-electricity project,” he said.
He was acting on instruction from provincial police commander (PPC) Supt Michael Welly. The 11 are from Punano.
Police continue to patrol the main highway.
MPs for Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara have assisted in the funding, said Yalamu.
PPC Welly said no peace arrangements had been reached and community leaders wanted police to maintain order. Welly added that the problem started when Yauna people disputed the ILG set up by the Punano to receive royalties from the new hydropower project.
“This matter is supposed to be settled in court.
“No (one has) the right to take up arms.
“Let the police deal with the investigation into this matter.”
Churches have been providing shelter for women and children whose houses were burnt down.

  • How many more years,…decades…will Papua New Guineans fight and kill each other over land disputes? I would like to see the courts, the MP’s and the Prime Minister show some good leadership and designate 2024 as a year to do extensive land surveying and get this land problem taken care of once and for all. Bottom line is that PNG will not move forward as a nation as long as we tangle with each other in these senseless disputes.
