PNG keen to boost ties

THE State is keen on seeing increased cooperation in areas of trade and defence and addressing maritime security, malicious cyber activities and disinformation, among others, that would benefit Papua New Guinea and Estonia.
This was according to Governor -General Sir Bob Dadae yesterday when receiving the ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to PNG, Kersti Eesmaa.
Eesmaa presented her letters of credence to Sir Bob at the Government House after reviewing a military guard of honour and the police band.
Sir Bob said: “We (PNG) are indeed grateful to receive you and look forward to enhancing and furthering the already good bilateral relations.
“That have existed between to the two countries following the establishment of diplomatic relations seven years ago in 2016.
“The PNG Government recognises the continued support and important contributions that we share at the United Nations (UN).
“Climate change and digital transformation by our governments to develop into a digital society.
“PNG would also like to see increased direct bilateral cooperation in areas of trade and defence, including addressing maritime security, malicious cyber activities, emerging technologies, tourism, investment and development assistance that would be beneficial to our countries and peoples,” he added.
Eesmaa expressed to the Governor-General the gratitude of her country and their president for PNG’s support for Estonia in the UN and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
She said PNG had a friend and ally in Estonia and assured of extending her country’s support and assistance to Papua New Guinea in the areas of emerging information technologies and cyber activities.
She also met with Prime Minister James Marape.
