PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports
  • So Kumuls coach Justin Holbrook has left the PNG job and decided to take a position with Mal Meninga and the Kangaroos. That’s a little disappointing but it gives someone else a chance to build something with the Kumuls and PNG rugby league. I can think of a few possible candidates: Shane Flanagan might be interested, Jason Demetriou is apparently interested and Brad Arthur is free. What about Billy Slater?
  •  The other names are Adrian Lam, David Wesltey and Paul Aiton. Sound them out. I know Davo would love a chance to coach the Kumuls. Marcus Bai to be assistant. David Mead, anyone?
  •  Congratulations to Emma Waiwai on her election as president of the PNGOC. Hopefully we can get some good synergy and better cooperation between the OC and PNG Sports Foundation to support national federations and implement the National Sports Policy.
  •  I want to know who the NF was that decide to change tack and vote for Emma Waiwai after initially voting for Richard Kassman.
  •  Damien Cook should’ve signed with the Bulldogs because then I’d like them a lot more. Also because he’d replace the pest that’s playing hooker for them right now.
  •  The three reasons India won the T20 World Cup final: Jasprit Bumrah (surely stands shoulder to shoulder with Kapil Dev), anyone that can move it boths ways and generate pace off a short run-up and do it consistently is special; Suryakumar Yadav’s catch of the tournament (not downplaying Marnus Labuschagne’s effort) to dismiss Dave Miller; and, Virat Kohli’s 76 (obviously).
  •  Muruks couldn’t hold out the Wigmen and had to settle for the draw. It could’ve been a loss if Trevor Solu had kicked that conversion from the sideline. Thanks Trev.
  • Reporter who is still new covering sport writes that if the a goal is kicked successfuly its a “conversion” and if it misses then it’s a “diversion”. It’ll take some time to sink in.
  • I hope the CRU judiciary has a look at a couple of dangerous tackles from that Harlequins-University match on Saturday. They need to stamp this type of lifting and flipping/spearing technique out. It’s very dangerous and could result in a life-changing injury or worse. The players at fault were both red-carded. I hope it’s not a matter of waiting for the club whose players were hurt to make a formal complaint.
  • Someone wears a T-shirt that says “If I’m running, you should be too.” What does that say about the wearer and about the one who reads it?
  • Trump’s a good guy. He took it easy on Biden in their first debate. – PGTP ([email protected])
