PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports
  • First off, hooray for the Blues! What a dominant performance. They thoroughly deserved that win. This sets up a massive Game 3 at Suncorp Stadium.
  •  I think Maroons coach Billy Slater would’ve learned a valuable lesson from this game. His side didn’t seem really into it. And when they got behind by 30-odd, it was over. That momentum generated by NSW was borne out of desire, desperation and determination. The next time Billy finds himself in a similar situation he must not take it for granted that his players will go out and perform like their lives depended on it.
  •  Anyway, us Maroons fans won’t have any problems being the butt of jokes, memes and whatever else you Blues throw at us over the next few weeks in light of Wednesday’s result. You deserve it, take your best shots. And then get ready for heartbreak and sorrow on July 17.
  •  Hagen Eagles are leading the Digicel Cup? No way. It’s amazing. See guys, that’s what happens when you just focus on playing good, hard rugby league, and check your attitudes at the door. The Eagles have landed.
  •  Reporter starts his question to Ricky Stuart following that loss to the Tigers: “Ricky, you’re clearly not happy…” What do you mean, that’s his default setting.
  •  Still scratching my head over how Hoskins Sotutu missed out on the All Blacks squad. And the reason Razor gave was WEAK AS, BRO!
  •  Hey, whatever happened to Leeroy Kamau? He left a great athletics scholarship Stateside, to do what? Where is he now? You done messed up, son!
  • All Blacks coach Scott Robertson wears his hair in an odd schoolboy semi-coiffed style that is not in keeping with his age or his position. In fact he’s is almost as bad as Boris Johnson’s hairdo. They should get a clue from the man, the myth, the legend, with the best hair, Big Daddy himself – Donald Trump.
  • Rugby league powers that be in Lae, Morobe, I propose that you honour one of your Kumuls by naming the Lae Rugby League ground after him. The Steve Malum Stadium, anyone? Got a great ring to it, I say.
  • USA cricket captain Corey Anderson said this following his side’s effort at the T20 World Cup. “We are still an associate nation growing and trying to get a bigger player pool.” Well, what do you know? We’ve got the same problem over here too.
  • Spoonerisms are a commentator’s curse. One lady described a sequence of plays as a “turning shock of events”. I actually like it. – PGTP ([email protected])
