OK Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) has announced the establishment of “a reliable” JetA1 (aviation fuel) supply chain, crucial to resolving the ongoing fuel crisis in Papua New Guinea.
Company managing director and chief executive officer Kedi Ilimbit said the decision was made in response to Puma Energy’s continued inability to supply fuel to meet the nation’s demand.
“OTML has recently concluded agreements with the national airlines to ensure a stable and sufficient fuel supply for flights to continue without interruptions.
“The aviation sector in PNG has been severely impacted by Puma’s continuous supply disruptions, causing significant travel delays and economic setbacks.
“OTML’s commitment to securing this supply chain marks a pivotal moment for the industry, paving the way for renewed confidence and operational efficiency for our airlines and their passengers.
“We are thrilled to have established a reliable supply chain that will play a crucial role in resolving the fuel crisis in PNG.
“Our agreements with these major airlines underscore our dedication to supporting the industry and our nation with the essential resources needed to resume and maintain robust flight operations,” Ilimbit said.
The agreements between OTML and PNG’s leading airlines included long-term supply contracts ensuring uninterrupted JetA1 fuel supply.
In April this year, OTML discontinued its diesel and JetA1 arrangement with Puma Energy in Tabubil.
The disconnection was affirmed with a notice by Puma Energy of its intention to vacate and demobilise its facilities in Tabubil.
Ilimbit said: “After Puma refused OTML’s offers to buy these facilities, OTML explored alternative solutions.Consequently, the company engaged with alternative providers, facilitating a seamless transition toward self-sufficiency in its fuel requirements.”
