IALIBU-PANGI MP Peter O’Neill has urged government leaders and law enforcers to engage more with locals to improve law and order issues in the country.
“A thousand policemen can be recruited but it will not reduce the alarming increase in crime rates in the country if there is lack of respect and communication between leaders and the society,” he said.
“We need leaders to ensure there is leadership in the society.”
O’Neill said these issues have not only affected the provinces but the country as a whole.
“It brings shame to the country and the Government must focus on these issues,” he said.
“If the rule of law is not enforced fairly, people take it upon themselves and that is what’s happening around the country.”
O’Neill believed that many of these issues were either through tribal fights, sorcery-related, family violence or politically related violence.
He urged policemen to build that connectivity and trust with street vendors as a start to build and earn trust.
“These people are out there because of lack of opportunities, they have families to feed, hence, they find means to make money. Engage more on law and order issues affecting lives of people in the society,” he said.
When responding to questions from the public via Facebook, O’Neill said a lack of employment opportunities and the increase in the prices of goods and services were a contributing factor.
