EAST Sepik’s North and South Wosera people staged a peaceful protest last week and petitioned local MP Joseph Yopyyopy to address the ongoing law and order issues.
Patiko ward councillor Philip Frangili said councillors, public servants, students and youths held banners and walked from Jambitanget to North-Wosera local level government office with a petition to be given to Yopyyopy.
“This follows the recent killing of a man in Moundu village as well as other law and order issues including the continuous armed robberies that disrupt the flow of services.
‘’Law and order is a big challenge in the district since the 2022 national election. Last year was okay but this year, it’s getting out of hand and the local MP is not doing anything to address it so people came up with the initiative to get his attention,” Frangili said.
He said health workers and teachers from outside districts and province serving there were attacked, robbed of their belongings, harassed and threatened daily when travelling on public transport and some had left.
‘’If this continues in the next few months, we will have no public servants. Leaders tried their best but without police manpower, we cannot do much.
‘’The people appeal to Yopyyopy to beef-up police manpower as currently there are only two policemen and they are helpless,” he said.
“Youths are armed with wire catapults and homemade guns and take advantage of limited police manpower to attack people. The road condition is also deteriorating, affecting the flow of services so people and public transport are easily attacked.”
