MOTU-KOITA West Netball Association has started its four-day holiday netball tournament at the Hohodae Hollywood courts at Hanuabada village to keep children busy during the term 2 school holiday.
President Kori Navuru said the tournament started yesterday and included kids who were not actively involved in their local competition. It gave them an opportunity to play the sport.
“Our objective behind this junior netball tournament is to keep the children busy and be inclusive, especially for young girls Under-10 and U13 who don’t play in our local competition,” Navuru said of the tournament.
“We started with the U10s (yesterday) and continue with their matches tomorrow (today) before the U13 girls’ competitions take place on Thursday and Friday.”
She said the U10s registered six teams and it was open for the kids within the village to register in a team and participate.
“For our U13s we have a lot of interest and a lot of kids have registered to participate. We will try to limit the number of teams to allow the competitions to finish on time by Friday,” she said.
“We would like to acknowledge the executives in charge of the venue for allowing us to run this mini tournament for the children,” the president said.
Navuru said a mini-presentation would be held following the four-day tournament to acknowledge the kids’ participation on Friday, including special awards for the best shooter, defender, midcourt, winning teams and runners up in U10 and U13 divisions to conclude the event.
