A MAGISTRATE has issued an arrest warrant for a state minister’s son, who allegedly hit and killed a woman with his vehicle, for failing to appear in court for arraignment twice.
Maison Daki, 19, from Komoga village, Tambul-Nebilyer in Western Highlands, was charged with dangerous driving causing death on Oct 5 in Port Moresby.
Committal Court Magistrate Laura Wawun-Kuvi, when issuing the warrant of arrest for Daki, said no one was above the law.
Wawun-Kuvi issued the warrant after Police Prosecutor Sgt Sandra Holland filed an application seeking the warrant for Daki for failing to comply with the court by not appearing on the mentioned date for arraignment.
“The arrest warrant is to be executed by police and returns to court on Jan 25 for review,” Wawun-Kuvi said.
Holland informed the court that Daki was out on police bail but had breached one of the conditions by failing to attend his court hearings.
Police alleged that on Oct 5 between 5.30pm and 6pm, Daki was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser along Taurama, Vadavada in the National Capital District.
He was allegedly driving at high speed past the Bethel Funeral Home approaching a bend, lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road and onto a footpath striking and killing 24-year-old Aisha Charlie, who had been walking with her husband Jack.
Daki’s vehicle overturned on the side of the road.
He and his wife, who was also in the vehicle, were rescued by bystanders who lifted and pushed the vehicle back to its upright position.
Daki was later taken to the Traffic Police Station, arrested and charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.
