PAPUA New Guinea star and Salford Red Devils centre Nene Macdonald continues to dominate in the UK Super League as he is currently ranked third in the standings for the Man of Steel Award leader-board.
With the competition already at its halfway mark, the former NRL back is a serious contender for the UK rugby league’s prestigious individual award which is similar to the National Rugby League’s Dally M Award.
The 30-year-old’s scintillating form was evident in the last two weekends as he was named in the Super League team of the week for round 14 and 15 consecutively.
In the round 15 match at the Salford Community Stadium, the Devils produced an upset beating the competition’s top side St Helens 20-18 with Macdonald being a key figure in their success.
The former North Queensland Cowboy made a try-assist which saw former English international and Devils second-rower Kallum Watkins score the match winner in what was a brutal encounter between the two teams. Macdonald has scored seven tries, three try assist and seven line breaks in his 15 appearances this season.
Red Devils will face Hull FC in round 16 match on Monday morning (PNG time) and Macdonald will be aiming to maintain his form. The Paul Rowley-coached side are fifth on the 12-team competition ladder and they share same competition points with Warrington Wolves who are in fourth spot.
Macdonald said last week that his rise in form was due to his coach (Rowley) allowing him to play his free-style football compared to last year when he was with the Leeds Rhinos where he would only do a specific job.
The Kairuku, Central man said he felt like himself again at Salford as he could express his full skillset.
