DAWAPIA Sevens organisers are eager to improve the rugby union tournament each year as they look to create a pathway for talented players in East New Britain.
Tournament director Lenon Bibiken told The National that the number of teams this year had increased from 15 to 22 compared with 2021.
He said the increase showed that the tournament was prompting more interest each year.
“We want to create pathways for local talents,” Bibiken said.
“Such a tournament creates a platform for local talents to showcase their skills.
“We’ve seen bigger improvements from last year. We have new teams competing in the tournament.
“That is what we want.
“We want the tournament to grow every year.”
Meanwhile, Hoodsco Wanderers edged Matupit Diggers 14-12 to claim the tournament at the Tomaringa Oval last Saturday.
Wanderers captain Ephraim David said they had no coach to prepare them for the tournament.
“We were expecting someone to raise their hand for the coaching role,” he said. “But it didn’t work out, so we took the responsibility to prepare ourselves.
“We learnt from each game and worker hard to correct our mistakes.
“As a result, we reached the finals and were crowned as champions of the tournament.”
Wanderers and Diggers claimed prize money of K5,000 and K2,500 respectively.
