TEENAGE Hohola Flies centre Serena Philip helped her team upset a star-studded Defence 20-10 in the Port Moresby Rugby League women’s competition at the National Football Stadium on Saturday.
The 17-year-old was in good form scoring two tries and kicking two goals for a personal haul of 12 points and awarded the player of the match.
The win sees Flies move to the top of the ladder after nine rounds.
Philip and Becky Kambi scored tries and Philip added a goal in the first half while Defence hooker Lisa Bina crossed along with centre Tere Kiniwi and half Lila Malabag added a goal for a 10-10 score line at the break.
Flies hooker Larinda Karo got her side ahead 14-10 and Philip broke through for the match winner and converted it to relegate Defence to defeat.
Hohola’s veterans Cathy Neap, Daisy John and Jacklyn Sele led well with their effort on and off the ball.
Former international Neap said it was important to keep a high pace in order to keep their more fancied rivals on the back-foot throughout the match.
“We know what this opposition can do with the wealth of experience they have so our pace and intensity had to be good to keep them off their game,” she said.
