A RUGBLY league club in the nation’s capital is thankful for the support from a local business house for continuous annual support.
Such support has helped youths refrain from illegal activities and push the Gabutu Dragons to maintain very high standards yearly, finishing at top two at the end of every year’s competition.
Club vice president Moses Kumbi said Patricks Transport at Gabutu has assisted the club annually with club affiliation and member registration fees.
Every two years, the company sponsors new sets of uniform which include jumpers, sportswear and socks for all players in the three divisions – men’s A grade, men’s under 20s and women.
On Saturday, Gabutu Dragons wore their new uniforms and took on the Central Dabaris development team in a friendly match at the Moresby South Stadium.
“Many of the players have done away with illegal activities and have seen sports as a positive avenue.
“People from different ethnic groups reside at Gabutu and this is reflected in the Dragons.”
Kumbi appealed to all other business houses throughout Port Moresby and the country to support sporting teams in their respective communities.
“Please support and sponsor them if they want to put up a team, especially the youths,” he said.
“Sports can help them change their mindsets to be better.”
Kumbi said the Gabutu Dragons had always maintained high discipline and it was enforced on the players throughout their tenure with the club.
“We tell them that what you do here on the field must also be practised at home with your families.
“We enforce discipline because we want to market them and put them out there.
“We don’t want to just have them play here (Moresby South), we want them to be recognised and go out.
“To take part in bigger competitions and even represent PNG,” he said.
