MEMBERS of a youth group in Tambul-Nebilyer, Western Highlands, have started an inland fish farming project at Palme village to generate income for themselves.
Palex Youth Development Association secretary Jeffery Pokea said that through the help of villagers, they were able to build two ponds holding more than 1,500 fish (tilapia).
They also built a 3km road using spades, crow bars and bush knives from the main road to the pond.
“Our main focus is to improve the quality of life for association members, and contribute to the project and its development plan,” Pokea said.
The project, which started early this year, will expand once more land is made available.
Pokea said they planned to have 100 more ponds.
They hope to get training and technical supports from the National Fisheries Authority.
