A FLEXIBLE and open distance education (Fode) centre in Maprik, East Sepik, graduated its first students last week.
Sixteen Fode students that studied under category of full correspondence, were part of the 48th Maprik Secondary School Grades 10, 11 and 12 graduation.
Fode coordinator for Maprik secondary Fode centre Julias Waiguma said there were two categories under Fode which were full correspondences and upgraders.
Waiguma said Fode had given a chance to the full correspondence students to have a feel of what a graduation was like.
He said unlike full correspondence students, upgraders had been in formal education and already had the chance to graduate.
“This graduation is a memorable event for us as it is the first time we graduate our first 16 students,” he said.
A Grade 10 Fode graduate Annelly Alesi, age 52, and a mother of two teenagers, said she was very grateful for being a Fode student who had the opportunity to be part of the great event for the first time in her life.
Alesi, who had completed Grade Six many years back, said she aimed to complete all her studies through full correspondence and get a certificate in early childhood education so that she could become an early childhood teacher, which was her dream.
“Fode is open to anybody regardless of your status whether you are single or married, employed or not employed and even the ages don’t matter.”
