Family grieving father

A YOUNG family is grieving for their father who was allegedly killed while enforcing the Koki neighbourhood watch project in Port Moresby.
Relative Andrew Maino said the late Steven Hau Aku, 47, from Babiko village in Kairuku, Central, was allegedly killed while arresting a suspect at the notorious Koki bus stop three weeks ago.
“The neighbourhood watch project was an initiative of Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko to keep the notorious Koki bus stop safe from petty criminals,” Maino said.
“Aku was helping the Koki auxiliary police arrest the suspect who has been harassing people at the bus stop.”
Maino said Aku was employed by Black Swan Security company and was a volunteer of neighbourhood watch when off duty.
“On June 15, after completing his shift, he was dropped off at 8am at the bus stop to make his way home,” he said.
“At the same time, the suspect, allegedly drunk, was harassing people at the bus stop and was chased by auxiliary police.
“Since he (Aku) was a volunteer of the neighbourhood watch, he also gave chase and apprehended the suspect.
“Together, with the auxiliary policemen, they wrestled the suspect and put him into the police vehicle, bought by the Moresby South development authority.
“However, the suspect attempting to escape, jumped off the vehicle and pushed Aku, who was caught off-guard and he fell on the bitumen.
Aku’s head hit the concrete heavily and died.
“His body is at the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue awaiting post-mortem as part of the investigation.
“The suspect escaped but surrendered the next day to police and is now in custody at the Boroko Police Station.”
Maino said that they were seeking Tkatchenko’s help to assist with the haus krai.
