CRU names train-on squad for Super 7s

CAPITAL Rugby Union (CRU) has named a 49-man train-and-trial squad for the upcoming Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU) Super Sevens series.
The squad will be trimmed after trials which will be held at Bava Park tomorrow (9am kick-off).
CRU president Kori Chan said yesterday that former Pukpuk Frank Gabi had been appointed as coach while Jack Maraha would be his assistant.
“Congratulations to all players who have been selected to compete to make the final CRU Boromas sevens team who will take part in the upcoming Super Sevens series,” he said.
“The squad has been named and will commence training under new head coach Frank Gabi and assistant coach Jack Maraha this week.
“The squad comprise a mixture of players from all CRU clubs.
“The squad will help Gabi prepare for the upcoming Super Sevens series in just over three weeks.
“But CRU is using this opportunity to build a medium for a long-term sevens programme and pathway for CRU players. More details on this plan will be provided following the completion of the series.”
Kori said all player would be required to attend training sessions and the trials this week.
Meanwhile, the series – which is sponsored by Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited – will be held from April 30-May 22 at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby.
Teams will come from 18 provincial unions across the country.
The unions are National Capital District, New Ireland, Northern, Sepik, Western Highlands, West New Britain, Alotau, Gulf, Madang, Morobe, East New Britain, Eastern Highlands, Manus, Daru, Bougainville and Mendi.
