THE newly established Southern Highlands Teachers College in Nipa-Kutubu needs a library and information communication technology (ICT) services for high academic performance, says principal John Onguglo.
Onguglo said these were two important needs that would enhance the skills of the students to become professional teachers after graduating. Staff also need the services.
Speaking during the inaugural diploma in teaching (primary) graduation ceremony at Puril village on Friday, he said the institution faced enrolment and accommodation issues and staff shortage in the first year.
“How can we accommodate the growing number of students who want to become teachers and the government’s vision for quality education?” he said.
“The institution needs these important services for quality outcome.
“In the first year, we supposed to have 10 staff but had seven, second year, 18 but had 12, third year 20 but had 12 and now we have 23 positions available and we believe the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST) will look into the issue.
“The Nipa-Kutubu district development authority and the United Church had been very supportive, through their support, the college is able to graduate 37 teachers who will go out into the rural areas to educate our children.”
Onguglo said though the school faced staff shortage, the staff worked together to give the best to the students and he is thankful for their commitment and dedication.
“Students who work under pressure and are committed to their studies become successful in life, I believe they will prosper in their carrier, some will further their studies and return to the college to be part of the hardworking staff,” he said.
Onguglo said the 37 teachers must be disciplined and show respect to their parents, the community, school administration and the students that they will be teaching.
