Blueprint for regional progress

Letters

IN the past 49 years, Central and Papuan members of Parliament (MPs) have missed a critical opportunity to establish a Papua Development Secretariat.
Such a body, if wisely conceived and executed, could have been a transformative force for the region, fostering collaboration and ensuring sustainable development across Papua. Now, more than ever, the creation of this secretariat is imperative.
It would serve as a centralised hub for all Papuan governors and MPs, facilitating a unified approach to regional development.
By working collectively as a single development team, they could advocate for and implement improvements across various sectors. The secretariat would focus on promoting long-term sustainable development, ensuring that all efforts are coherent and directed towards the common goal of regional prosperity.
Key development priorities

  1. Political reforms
In our quest for progress, political reform is crucial.
Papuan MPs must champion these values to build trust and ensure the rule of law prevails. By promoting transparency, accountability and good governance, the secretariat could create a political landscape that is responsive to the needs of the people.
  2. Economic reforms
To uplift our economy, we must focus on practical economic reforms.
The secretariat should prioritise practical economic reforms aimed at fostering entrepreneurship, investing in infrastructure and creating job opportunities.
Creating job opportunities would reduce unemployment and elevate the standard of living, leading to a more stable and prosperous region.
  3. Social reforms
Social reforms will be pivotal in building a stronger, prosperous, secure and more progressive society in Papua.

Education is the foundation of a strong society, and ensuring that every child has access to quality education is paramount.
Healthcare accessibility will ensure a healthy population, capable of contributing to societal growth.
Promoting gender equality and social inclusivity will foster a compassionate and peaceful community, where every individual feels valued and respected.
The establishment of a Papua Development Secretariat is not just a necessity but an urgent priority.
By focusing on political, economic and social reforms, the secretariat can drive sustainable development across the region.
It is time for Papuan leaders to come together, setting aside differences and work towards a unified vision of progress.
This collaborative effort will not only benefit the current generation but will also pave the way for a prosperous and sustainable future for all of Papua.
The time to act is now.
