SOUTHERN regional trials for Australian Football League (AFL) will be held at Colts Oval next month with four teams expected to compete.
Port Moresby AFL president Douglas Lai told The National yesterday that the selection trials would be part of the selection for the Papua New Guinea Mosquitoes ahead of international tournaments at the end of the year.
The four teams that will compete in the two representative teams from Central and two teams from Port Moresby.
“We have four teams who will be competing, the two teams from Central will come from Hula Point and Marshall Lagoon,” he said.
“The Port Moresby teams will be selected from the POMAFL competition and we are expecting a weekend of exciting football.
“Its part of the Mosquitoes selection process and players in POMAFL will be looking forward to making the cut in the two teams for the trials.”
Meanwhile, the POMAFL senior men’s competition completed its round 11 matches on Sunday which saw West Eagles beat Bomana Cats 43-22 to remain at the top of the 10-team competition ladder.
The Eagles kicked six goals and seven behinds over the Cats who managed just three goals and four behinds.
In other senior men’s game, Concept Koboni beat Alavana Swans 38-35 while defending premiers Gereka Bombers beat Gerehu Magpies 53-40.
Bombers slotted eight majors and five behinds to stay ahead of the Magpies six goals and four behinds in a close contest at Colts.
Lai said the POMAFL men’s finals would start after the Southern regional trials.
